Today I spent the day in the studio painting both a commission and shelves! We are building storage furniture which will help the studio be more functional. When it is finished I will share pictures with everyone. In the meantime, the commission is moving along and is the more important painting I did!

I decided to do a larger architectural landscape. "A Step Back in Time" is 16 x 16 and was painted from photographs of the Garden District in New Orleans that I took this fall. Walking the streets there is amazing, like going back in time to another era, a life of ease and slower pace.

Happy New Year!

Thank you all for following my blog. Sharing my artwork with everyone is very special to me. Much more exciting work and events will follow this new year.

Two months ago I opened a cooperative studio with another artist, Janet Dineen. We are both working in the studio now and it is wonderful.

In February I will be teaching a workshop at the Art Center for the Islands in Port Aransas. More information about this will follow.

I also created an online shop at www.etsy.com. Just search for Jane Gillette and you will find my paintings listed there.

Back to France...after a few days of feeling frustrated with my painting I returned to France, doing four small architectural landscapes. I plan to do a larger painting of the white umbrellas and am now working on some market scenes! Painting is going better and I am excited about the market paintings. I want to share the trip with all of you and am posting these small paintings which are completed.

For the past week I have been working in my new studio at 722 Tarpon Lane in Port Aransas, Texas. The light seems good, and the space is comfortable. I have only completed a couple of paintings, there will be more to come!

For many years an old friend of mine has urged me to paint a great white elk. At first I thought he was teasing me but over the years I realized that he really wanted me to do it. Finally I gave it a try...I say a try because I have never even seen one before. This is the result. He is pleased and this elk is going to be at home with my friend. What a great experience.

After a wonderful trip to France I have been painting non-stop! I am working on my composition, trying to get the paint to work a little harder and the paintings more interesting. So I am in growth mode, hopefully coming out of it on the other end with exciting new paintings. These are part of the process.

I finally have some time to get familiar with the area visually and am showing some of my first attempts. As I get more comfortable the paintings will become larger and more complex. Moving on to larger paintings. The cactus paintings got lots of attention at the show last weekend so I thought I would focus on them a little longer. Notice a little sparkle has been added. They are a challenge for me, I haven't lived around cactus before. But they are fun, and pretty and I like where they are going.

Glimpses of Port Aransas

Since my upcoming show on May 21-22 is in Port Aransas, Texas, I decided to do a few small works of the area. The square ones will be framed in 8 x 8 metal frames and will sell for $85. The long ones will be in 8 x 13 gold metal frames and will sell for $120. These little paintings are charming and were fun to paint. Hope to see everyone at the show.

The reason I paint the same thing over and over again is so I can become familiar with it. The more I learn about the subject, the more creative I become. I have never been an artist who nails it the first time...and used to think that those who could were better than me. Now I have developed a process that nurtures my creativity and really enjoy going through it.

These paintings are from pictures I took from little openings in castles in Wales. At the time I thought they would be a fun series to paint, but it has taken me awhile to decide I was ready to tackle them. These are all fairly small...4 x 9, if I tackle them in a larger size it would allow me to put more subtle tones in the little view!

Here are a few samples of architectural landscapes I have painted since moving to the Gulf Coast of Texas. I hope to generate some interest in them and felt I needed some samples to show from the area. Architecture is very different here, as is the landscape. It is a bit of a challenge, but I have painted Key West and Charleston in the past, and this is somewhat like those areas. Just not as historical. Painting new construction is a bit of a challenge, I have always been drawn to the historical parts of communities.

I am totally fascinated with the pelicans in Port Aransas, our new home. I sit in the morning waiting for them to fly by. So far taking pictures of them has been a real challenge, but I am hoping to create a series of paintings as I become more familiar with these surroundings. Here are two studies I have done of them, very small.

I have started working on a little series called "Buds and Berries." It has been fun working to make the paint be the statement rather than the subject. Not that the subject isn't important, but it is minimized.

I hope to continue these paintings as things begin to grow in my garden.

These little kisses were at the baby shower. I want to document her little life through painting as much as I can. It is a rare and great opportunity and I am looking forward to enjoying every minute of it.

For some reason I am taken with this election and keep wanting to express my excitement in paintings. In the Mount Vernon painting, titled "One to Forty-Four...Hope is Alive in America" I am making the connection between the hope of a new nation and the hope of a nation renewed.

In the White House painting titled "Hope Renewed", I am expressing the hope that was expressed in the November election...hope for all Americans for the future.

Hollyhocks

While I was walking my dog I became enamored with my neighbor's hollyhock, which I had never noticed before. I got my camera, took pictures, then took watercolor paper outside and stood in their garden drawing. As with any new subject, I am still getting familiar with the structure of a hollyhock.

The most fun is that I later learned that my neighbor hadn't planted them. So they are either a gift of a bird or the wind!
